According to DNV GL, the number of ships installing or ordering scrubbers has almost doubled to 3,229 in the past six months. In October last year, this figure was 1,700.
Of the 3,229 ships, 2,372 were modified and 857 were newbuildings.
The fall in futures prices for high-sulfur fuel oil has spurred sales of scrubbers.
Of the scrubbers currently installed or ready to be installed, about 80% are open scrubbers and only 17% are mixed scrubbers. The open scrubber discharges wastewater into the sea, while the closed loop scrubber stores it to the port.
In terms of ship type, bulk carriers accounted for the largest proportion of 35%; refined oil and crude oil vessels accounted for 27%; cruise ships,Roll-on/roll-off ships, gas tanker, RoPax, general cargo ships, car carrier and passenger/car ferries occupied the rest. 38%.
According to DNV GL data, LNG powerboats have great potential. Currently, there are 300 LNGs used as ship fuels in operating or order ships.
